BIOGRAPHY
“The only time to love is now”
My name is Soukaynah. I was born in Switzerland in 1996, with a Lebanese father and a Swiss mother. This lovely mixture of cultures has enhanced my outlook on the world and on human relationships with all their dualities and complementarities. I have kept many memories of childhood and of the sincerity one feels in those years.
Drawing and expressing my emotions in pictures has always been important to me, almost a vital need. From early on I have felt called to share, to help, and to accompany others and this calling nourishes me and inspires me to create. I therefore became a nursing assistant and worked for almost ten years with the elderly, with the mentally and physically handicapped, and with children. Being curious about everything, I sought to find love in every heart and observe that, in spite of all the differences, the same spark of divine light was in each of them.
Nowadays I devote myself to art as much as possible. I write and draw little comic strips about self-understanding and the quest for peace. Being of a contemplative nature, I enjoy viewing and celebrating the beauty of the world around us, and I’m convinced this sort of attitude is what will save the world.
Artistic approach
I draw and write intuitively using the same tools I’ve used since childhood: coloured pencils, felt pens, and a bit of watercolour. Being a jack-of-all-trades, I sculpt and paint as I like. All kinds of creating are worth doing. I also do drama and dance. My faith makes me want to make pictures that do good to people’s souls and remind them of their inner child.
I find poetry in anything and everything that is sincere, no matter what its shape or form. I take inspiration from the great outdoors, and from all sorts of feelings and perceptions.
Drawing allows me to let go and switch to automatic mode so that I can explore certain areas of my heart more deeply. I am especially attracted to birds and what they symbolize. I love watching them and bringing them into my pictures. I also enjoy repainting old Russian nesting dolls that I find in flea markets. These dolls, all fitting into one another, are such wonderful introspective things representing an encompassing femininity and a process of transformation. Yes, when I draw, what I’m doing is admitting to myself who I am!
